Walk On
The Humming birds are preparing to migrate. At this time of the year more and more of them appear as they begin to travel down from the north, stopping over for the next several weeks as they feed with more and more frenzy. Soon they will leave us to travel further south before they make their final flight out over the ocean toward Brazil. Biologists still don’t know how it is they survive the landless journey from here to there. Faith is like that. It gets us from here to there and often defies human logic. If you have walked with the Lord for any length of time, you know…

Carried
I like being moved. There is a chair lift in a resort town in the Appalachian mountains I’ve ridden several times, and each time I have the same delightful experience of being carried. To sit back with my feet swinging, feeling the sun on my face and the wind in my hair, as I am caught up and away to the top of the mountain. The journey requires nothing of me, except my willingness to be born along to the eventual destination. Blissful moments of resting in the steady momentum of something other than myself. Trust is a gift I gladly embrace. It is desirable to have a solid foundation…

The River
Half-way across the narrow suspension foot bridge spanning the Nantahala River, I stood and looked out at the rushing water. I wasn’t alone. My husband was standing a few feet away watching me. Quietly he said, “What do you love about it?” After a long moment I responded, “It never stops. It’s musical. It’s ancient.” And I gave myself, again, to the God who made the river and me. Beauty calls to us, draws us in. It reveals both joy and longing. Worship, then, is the authentic response of the soul thus enraptured. “Teach me Your way, O Lord; I will walk in Your truth; unite my heart to fear…

The Beginning and The End
I love a good story. And being an avid reader, I’ve plowed through biographies, soared through fantasies, unraveled mysteries, and applied my logic to science fiction. Sometimes reading is a journey into myself, or a journey into the unknown where I suddenly find myself. An adventure in which perils are faced and overcome, where friendship and loyalty are necessary to defeat evil. There is nothing quite so satisfying as finishing a story that concludes with a window to the future of the characters, believing in happily ever after. Now, here we are, in the middle of a story. Much has happened before now, and a great deal more will happen…

I Am Known
I was not the most popular kid in school. I was the last one picked for a team when we played kick-ball during recess. And, there was usually at least one bully who would realize I was fair game to be called “fat” or “chubby.” One time, in fifth grade, a rather nasty note was left on my desk, signed, “The Whole Class.” It made me cry. After dinner that night, I told Daddy, “No one likes me.” He spent the next hour having me recall all the family and friends in my young life who not only liked me, they also loved me. I remember actually being surprised when…

God Alone
A Spirit-filled believer is a bit like a pneumatic tool in the hand of God. “A pneumatic tool is a type of power tool, driven by compressed air supplied by an air compressor. Most pneumatic tools convert the compressed air to work using a pneumatic motor. Compared to electric power tool equivalents, pneumatic tools are safer to run and maintain, without risk of sparks, short-circuiting or electrocution, and have a higher power to weight ratio, allowing a smaller, lighter tool to accomplish the same task. Furthermore, they are less likely to self-destruct in case the tool is jammed or overloaded.” (Wikipedia – Pneumatic Tools) Without the Spirit of God blowing through my life, I am static bits and pieces…

Sunrise, Sunset
Today is the first full day of our family vacation. This year there are thirty of us, ranging in age from a few months to eighty years. Consequently, getting to the island requires a whirlwind of planning and activity. Coordinating food and paraphernalia for that many bodies in two enormous beach houses, is a project manager’s dream come true, and my sister and I are spreadsheet queens. We are in heaven. Last night, after all the unpacking and organizing, I was alone on the deck (the others in my house having retired to bedrooms or living areas). There was a low bank of clouds at the horizon where blue gray…

Rain
We need rain. Where I live we’ve been in near drought conditions, which means we’ve taken to reviewing various weather apps with something bordering on desperation. Some of the neighboring counties have even implemented water restrictions. So, when the heavens opened up yesterday morning to give us a good two-hour soaking, I felt like dancing. Even going to the grocery store in the deluge didn’t dampen my spirits (if you’ll pardon the pun). There’s nothing quite so wonderful as rain when it’s been desperately dry. The grey overcast skies seem comforting rather than dreary. The rumble of thunder a herald of good tidings rather than frightening. It is, after all,…

Silence
I have nothing to say. Consequently, I shall proceed to espouse so much nothingness. It is remarkable that most humans do not know how to endure silence. To sit alone with one’s chattering mind can be wearying at best and alarming at worst, so we create distractions for ourselves in an effort to ignore the thoughts that plague us. This chaos can be ordered, and there are many forms of meditation and mental discipline to avail such order; however, real peace – peace that goes deep into our inmost being and stretches wide to embrace those within our atmosphere – this peace comes only from walking with God. Walking with…

Fear Not
“And Jesus came to them and touched them and said, ‘Get up, and do not be afraid.'” (Matthew 17:7 NASB) There are many times in Scripture when Jesus said, “Fear not. Don’t be afraid.” These are commands that indicate the choice is ours to make. I’m sure I’m not alone in struggling with this. Fear has a tendency to overtake and overwhelm. It is a powerful emotion. But, it is just that: an emotion. Most of us are often convinced that emotions happen to us, that we cannot control them. This notion, however, is a lie. One that our Enemy, the father of lies, perpetrates. If you have been with…
