The Rule of Peace
There is peace which surpasses understanding. (Philippians 4:7) When your eyes and ears are proclaiming chaos, the peace of God seems to defy reason. It is not a human emotion. Born of God, acknowledged by the Spirit of God within, real peace is the result of His authority and governance. He has authority over darkness and wicked schemes, and His people thrive under His righteous rule. Looking back at the verse in Philippians, see it in context with the verses preceding: “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness (or gentleness) be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in…

His Righteousness
This weekly offering has become a sacred rhythm of my life. Like keeping a travel journal or picture album re-marking the milestones of heart beats and soul rescues. As far as I can tell, it has not resulted in any far-reaching influence, and that is fine, since it remains a simple act of obedience. Father planted the idea and encouraged the machinations, and I told Him I would. Now I find that it is an elemental part of my relationship with Him, a sabbath expression of faith. I say “sabbath” because it is unique and set apart and only encountered every seventh day. I say “expression of faith” because it…

Instruction
I used to watch my youngest son sit in the floor with a box of those building blocks that snap together. Of course, this was many years ago, but the memories are still clear to me. With his small straight back, his head tilted down, and his little hands so nimble, he’d assess, plan and arrange all those little pieces until he had a masterpiece. Afterward, I’d have to make sure that the sheet of instructions was carefully tucked away inside the box for future reference. “Mom,” he’d say, “I need the map. Let’s not lose that, shall we?” And I would smile primly and say, “Of course, son. We…

Legacy and Destiny
“Tell your children of it, and let your children tell their children, and their children to another generation.” (Joel 1:3 ESV) Our week at the beach was simply divine. Nineteen adults and fourteen children from less than a year to over 80 years old. How could it not be full of life and rich with love. We started the week, as is our tradition, with Communion, and also with gratitude for the legacy of these family gatherings that began with my parents. As we witness the faithfulness of God together, we are aware of God’s command to instill in our children the knowledge of Him we have received by grace.…

Looking Forward
I am a list maker. And, I’ve been known to have lists of lists. Before you make any snap judgments about my need to control, let me be perfectly clear: I plan, with a deep conviction that God orders. Besides, whatever latent or repressed fears I may have that things will go awry if I don’t have a detailed list for any conceivable contingencies, He is quite able to deal with them and with my heart. The reason I am currently making lists is because we are packing to leave for our annual family vacation at the beach. Most everything has been checked and rechecked, and so here I sit…

Unburdened
Cares. Burdens. Anxieties. How often Scripture implores us to lay them down at His feet. He says we are not to fear, to be anxious for nothing, to give Him all our cares, because He cares and because He is victorious. (1 Peter 5:7; Luke 12:22-32) And, as a faithful believer, I try to do just that: give them to Him and acknowledge His Lordship in my heart. I am, however, also prone to pick them up again. My trust wavers, and I fail to remember that He is bigger than whatever I’m facing. Or, my pride intrudes, and I put my reputation above His. It may take me a…

Living the Adventure
It is late in the evening, and it has been a sweet Sabath. We were asked to serve Communion with several other couples and were early to church for prayer with the pastors and elders in preparation thereof. The reading of Scripture always pierces my heart and enlivens my spirit, and it is so very good to remember all He has done. His people have been doing so for thousands of years. We remember, and we speak of these things to our children and their children, and the gift goes on, generation after generation. After the service, and after greeting so many of our friends, we went back to mother’s…

Cleaning Closets
Cleaning and organizing a closet is a deeply satisfying experience. Taking everything out and choosing what to keep, what to toss, and what to give away. Replacing the kept things in reasonable order. Finishing with some aromatic sachets strategically placed and tied with satin ribbon. A worthy Saturday morning endeavor. Usually, there will be a handful of things that remind me to pray for someone. The pretty coral shawl my sister gave me, the basket from mother’s kitchen that has been repurposed to hold my socks, the dainty sandals my daughter-in-law gifted me, and the red rock bracelet placed in my hand by a friend in the church lobby several…

Testify
The clatter of utensils on dishes and ice hitting the bottoms of glasses. The aroma of culinary delights wafting from the kitchen. The happy laughter of children and the harmony of several conversations all happening at once. The sounds of Sunday dinner in a multi-generational gathering. This is what my sister and I always call “second Church.” We may all be talking about what the kids are doing for the summer, what is currently challenging us in our various vocations, or what the weather will be like when we all go to the beach next month, but what is really going on underneath all that is the brooding of the…

Sovereign
It is raining. Not heavy, but definitely steady. The evidence of God’s care and cultivation of His land. It will nourish the flora and replenish the waterways, and the air will smell cleaner when the skies clear. I am always strangely comforted by a good rain. Maybe it is a simple thing, but I like knowing that God is bigger and more powerful than I. He restrains His awesome and mighty hand and condescends to deal gently with me. When everything around is chaotic and tempestuous, and the harried and anxious are self-absorbed, and violence and hatred are bent on destruction, I go still and quiet in His presence and…
