Verity
The word, “verily,” is an old English word, and if you grew up reading the King James version of the Bible, you will recognize it. It means, of course, “in truth,” It also carries the meaning of “certainty and confidence.”
Jesus was often saying, “Verily, verily I say unto you….” In other words, this preface indicated His certain confidence of the truth of His words. One of my favorites is John 5:24: “Truly, truly, I say to you, the one who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.” (NASB) And in John 6:47: “Truly, truly, I say to you, the one who believes has eternal life.” (NASB)
He always only speaks truth. He is true, and His word is truth. “God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?” (Numbers 23:19 NKJV)
Our Lord is a promise-maker and a promise-keeper, and if we believe Him, we stand on solid ground, no matter what shakes around us. As well, when the truths of God, the verities, have taken root in our hearts, they spring up and produce the good fruit of His divine character.
“So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, ‘If you continue in My word, then you are truly My disciples.'” (John 8:31 NASB) And I want to continue in His word. Not just to know it, but to do it and to let it change me. Truth then purifies the error of my thoughts, the waywardness of my heart, and the selfishness of my will.
What are the verities in your life? What are the things on which you can stand? Who is it that will never fail you? As you are reading the Word this week, let the grace of His presence soak like rain and deepen the roots of His truth in your heart.
Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost but now I’m found, was blind but now I see.
