The Rule of Peace
There is peace which surpasses understanding. (Philippians 4:7) When your eyes and ears are proclaiming chaos, the peace of God seems to defy reason. It is not a human emotion. Born of God, acknowledged by the Spirit of God within, real peace is the result of His authority and governance. He has authority over darkness and wicked schemes, and His people thrive under His righteous rule.
Looking back at the verse in Philippians, see it in context with the verses preceding: “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness (or gentleness) be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:4-7 ESV)
Rejoicing in the Lord is a natural response in an intimate relationship with Him. He is beautiful beyond compare. He is good and kind and trustworthy. He is mighty to create and to save. He is intriguing and captivating. We don’t have to be anxious or afraid, because He is near and His presence changes everything. We can hear His voice and obey His direction, and in trusting Him we are protected from harmful imaginings and bitter motives.
This passage gives further instruction in the following verses: “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.” (Philippians 4:8-9 ESV) Here we are encouraged to discipline our thoughts with a righteous perspective, giving God glory wherever we see His character and His handiwork.
In our allegiance and service to the God of peace, we are afforded the peace of God. Dear One, are you beset with worries and battered by fears? Cast your burdens upon Him and learn of Him. Quiet your mind with the true knowledge of Him you have gained through relationship and experience. You do know Him to be trustworthy. You can see His great power in all of creation. Believe Him and rest in His supreme authority to govern you with peace.
Until next week, beloved, present yourself to the God of peace and receive the peace of God.
