Grateful Service
I spent the drive to church this morning telling my husband all the things I was carrying in my head about my upcoming work week. It was kind of him to listen (he is a patient man), and it actually did help me process a strategy of approaching the somewhat daunting tasks ahead. Being on a project team in the defining stages of a product build for a new core processor is not for the faint of heart. Not only does it require a certain nerdiness, it also requires courage, endurance and flexibility.
As we were approaching the church property, however, I was slightly chagrined that I had by-passed our normal contemplative preparations for coming into the house of the Lord. For a brief moment, I wondered if I would struggle to put my whole heart, mind and will into focusing on Him. Then I remembered His words, “I am with you always.”
His sovereign hand in my life places me in my work environment. He ordains and oversees the demands placed upon me, and He gives me everything I need. Whether I am deep in a spreadsheet or navigating relationships with my teammates, He is accomplishing His purpose in my life. Believing He is with me and believing He loves me is the foundation from which all my responses rise, “doing all as unto the Lord.”
“Whatever you do [whatever your task may be], work from the soul [that is, put in your very best effort], as [something done] for the Lord and not for men, knowing [with all certainty] that it is from the Lord [not from men] that you will receive the inheritance which is your [greatest] reward. It is the Lord Christ whom you [actually] serve.” (Colossians 3:23-24 AMP)
So, as it is the Lord Christ whom I actually serve, it is possible to be in worship of Him even in the doing of all the things. The doing itself becomes the song I sing. Thank God for His Holy Spirit, which is within me working, hovering, speaking unutterable words for the glory and the pleasure of the King. I only need to believe to be in step with Him and to see His glory.
Dear One, do you feel distracted? Does the dailiness of life seem to keep you from resting in Him? Believe that He is with you and find in your heart the way of loving Him in the context of the life He has given you.
Until next week, beloved, let everything you do be in grateful service to the Lord.
