Discovery
My dad used to say, “You never know what a day will bring.” And that is true. When we open our eyes to the new day, we are awaiting an unfolding of events. We usually have plans, even an expectation of scheduled appointments. But, with any of them, the unexpected can change things in a moment. We’ve all experienced a need to be flexible, even fluid. What is the saying? You can bend, or you can break.
There’s another element of the unexpected to be considered, too, and that is discovery. This journey of life is one of adventure and discovery. Have you considered approaching your days as doorways into new and interesting things? What might you learn? What new friend might you meet? What delight of beauty might you behold? As children of our heavenly Father, we are enabled to approach life with child-like eagerness. We do not have to fear or be anxious. We can launch into the day with every assurance that He is present, He is in control, and His good and kind nature pervades our moments. He is the great giver, and He delights to give gifts to His children. “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits.” (Psalm 103:2 ESV)
His mercies are new every day. What does this mean to you? A near escape from disaster? A get-out-of-jail-free card? I can tell you what it means to me. It means there is beauty to behold in the way He discloses Himself, the way He meets the tired with arms of strength, the way He mends the broken with redemption, and the way He raises me up from the ashes of my poor selfishness. This mercy is breathtaking. Not only do I not want to avoid needing it, I want to run into it. I want to find it. And I am promised that I can find it – every day.
Let’s be about the Father’s business and delight in discovering His mercies as we embark on each new day. May God be glorified when we acknowledge our need of Him, and Jesus exalted when we acknowledge and respond to His lordship. May the same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead dwell in us and quicken our mortal bodies as we persevere in this journey of discovery.
